Does your hydraulic cylinder want to tell you something? There are several severe hydraulic cylinder wear warning signs that can warn you in advance that the hydraulic cylinder is about to go out. Learning to recognize these obvious signs will help you solve common problems before they become catastrophic failures. In this way, you can perform planned hydraulic cylinder repairs and avoid costly unplanned downtime, or worse. So here are six signs that all is not well with your hydraulic cylinder. This articleZhongyou Heavy IndustryBring six signs of severe wear of the hydraulic cylinder.
1) You start to hear an amazing bang.
A hydraulic cylinder doesn't sound like an air cannon. Unpleasant pounding or tapping sounds are usually caused by air or cavitation in the hydraulic fluid. The bubbles in the system are greatly compressed and decompressed. Cavitation is a related phenomenon that occurs when there is not enough fluid entering any part of the hydraulic circuit. When this occurs, the pressure drops so low that the fluid essentially evaporates. When the pressure is restored, this fluid chamber will explode on its own with a nasty knocking sound. In either case, please stop what you are doing so as not to damage the machine. Cavitation and aeration can cause grease loss, overheating and seal burning, which can cause fluid contamination and damage system components.
2) Your hydraulic cylinder starts to "tremble".
Losing smooth and consistent movement is a bad sign. This is called a "slider" or "shivering", in which, as the cylinder stretches, the cylinder becomes hesitant, or the movement becomes stiff or jerky. This is usually accompanied by an increase in power and an increase in cylinder heat. Quivering is usually a sign of increased friction, which may be caused by severe conditions such as worn seals, insufficient lubrication, or bent piston rods.
3) Your electricity bill goes up.
If your energy needs increase, then your cylinder may be part of the problem. Increased friction and internal or external leakage will overcome these effects, so other parts of the system must work harder. The hydraulic pump must deliver more fluid to overcome leakage, the hydraulic motor works harder, and the torque efficiency per kilowatt decreases.
4) The actuator starts to decelerate.
A lack of power or a general slowdown in cylinder operation indicates some problem and may indicate some kind of internal leakage or increased friction. When a leak occurs, this means that the hydraulic cylinder takes longer to build up the required pressure. Sometimes, the operator will turn on the power to overcome the performance loss, but this only masks the problem. If the underlying leak or damage is not repaired, the cylinder will continue to degrade until it is completely unusable. Increasing power to compensate for poor performance will only accelerate the inevitable failure of the cylinder.
5) Your hydraulic cylinder is starting to overheat.
Although some hydraulic cylinders do experience temperature increases during operation, these temperatures are usually within the specified limits outlined by the manufacturer. Under certain high-speed or high-peak loads, some hydraulic cylinders may withstand temperatures as high as 120 degrees, but generally, during normal operation, the hydraulic cylinder should not exceed 80 degrees. An abnormal increase in temperature may be a sign of an abnormal condition in the cylinder. Therefore, it is best to know the general operating temperature of the cylinder.
6) You find that one side of the piston rod is worn out.
The cylinder is a linear actuator, which means it should run in a straight line. If there are signs of increased wear on one side of the rod, it indicates a functional abnormality, such as misalignment, excessive side load, rod bending, or some form of internal wear or damage. If it is not handled, it may cause power, efficiency loss and eventually failure.
Hydraulic cylinders rarely fail without warning. In most cases, these hard-working components will send some hint that everything is not good. Learning to grasp these clues is an important part of maintaining active maintenance, which can be carried out in an orderly and uninterrupted manner. So pay attention to what your hydraulic cylinder is trying to tell you.
