Workers may also be injured when standing on high platforms between roof joists. If the platform vibrates, workers may be caught between the joists, causing personal injury or death. 1) Cylinder replacement error:
The hydraulic oil supports the platform on the gas lift. Therefore, during maintenance tasks involving the replacement of the cylinder, it is essential to properly fix the platform. On a machine that can only approach the cylinder when the platform is slightly raised, this can be dangerous, especially when you have an unknowledgeable maintenance person who does not know that the cylinder supports the platform.
A severe situation may involve a temporary elevation, which is placed under a scissor lift to access the cylinder. After installing the new cylinder, the worker may remove the support frame to test the machine, but when the platform collapses, the hand reaching below will only suffer serious injuries.
2) Poor boom swing mechanism:
On aerial lifts, when the platform is suspended in the air, the boom swing mechanism is essential for smooth movement. This is especially important when the platform is close to a hazardous work environment, such as power lines. If the boom swing mechanism fails due to incorrect valve activation, it may cause the platform to enter unexpectedly.
In the worst case, when the worker is raised near the power cord, the boom rotation mechanism may malfunction. To prevent this, any errors in the boom swing function are not tolerated. 3) Unsecure platform:
In order to make high-altitude forklifts safe and stable for workers, guardrails must be installed on the platform to prevent workers from stepping too high when lifting from high places. The platform itself must also be firmly fixed to the fork or lifting carriage to prevent the platform from tilting sideways or forward at high altitudes.
4) Lift failure:
The drop speed of the hydraulic system shall not exceed 135 feet per minute. If the aerial lift fails and needs to be lowered to the ground, the lift should be lowered slowly, preferably under a speed limit of 135 feet. The design of the aerial lift should not exceed this speed under any circumstances, whether it is normal operation or failure.
5) Driverless seat:
When the lift is manoeuvred or raised, the driver's seat of the hydraulic lift must always be occupied by a licensed operator. Regardless of whether the platform is occupied or not, under no circumstances shall the driver's seat be freed for any time during the raising or lowering of the platform in the air. The space between the mast and the workers on the elevated platform must be shielded to prevent dangerous contact.
When the platform is occupied, if the lift is more than 4 feet from the ground, the forklift must not be moved from one point to another. The only exception is when an inhabited platform is raised in the air, only a few inches away from the intended connection point (such as a ledge or mast), and the worker must be pulled closer to safely step on the steps.
